Cusco - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Today, go on the Hiram Bingham train journey to Machu Picchu, the pinnacle of Incan civilization. While travelling, enjoy the passing Andean landscape and have lunch on board. Visit Machu Picchu to investigate the extensive ruins of the distant citadel. Machu Picchu was constructed in the 15th century during the peak of the Inca Empire, situated above the Urubamba River. American Hiram Bingham made the "Lost City" known to the world in 1911, but locals had been aware of its location for a long time. The original purpose of the structure is uncertain because the Incas did not leave any written documents. While touring Machu Picchu with a knowledgeable local guide, imagine the daily life of the priests, craftsmen, and slaves who lived there, and marvel at the meticulous, mortarless construction of the towering stone walls. Later, indulge in afternoon tea at the neighbouring Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel. After seeing the VIP Lounge at the station, return to Cusco on the Hiram Bingham train and enjoy dinner on board.

Today, visit Cusco and begin your exploration at the impressive Cathedral located on the Plaza de Armas. Regarded as one of the most stunning churches in the Americas, its design was inspired by the grand Spanish cathedrals of the time, incorporating Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements.

Explore the elaborate Santo Domingo cathedral, a 16th-century Dominican church and monastery constructed on the site of Koricancha, the main Inca religious structure devoted to sun worship. Next, visit the well-preserved ruins of Sacsayhuaman. The structure is a demonstration of the Incan civilization's architectural prowess, constructed using massive stones that were precisely cut and assembled without the use of mortar. Look out from this historic bastion, where the most significant fight between the Spanish and Incas took place, towards the red-tiled roofs of Cusco.
