Travel to Ecuador with Kids

The two biggest cities in Ecuador, Quito and Guayaquil, both have international airports that make getting to the country easy. From there, however, it can be difficult to traverse the country with young children. Fortunately, there are a few options to fit any budget. Public buses are the cheapest option for getting around, but can be uncomfortable for long trips and may not provide the best safety for kids. Private buses, on the other hand, can be more expensive, but are more comfortable and secure. For those who want a bit more luxury, there are plenty of rental car services available, and some even specialize in family trips. 

 

The capital of Ecuador, Quito, is a great place to take kids. As one of the highest cities in the world, there is plenty of adventure to be had in Quito. Riding the Teleferico – the gondola that brings visitors up the Pichincha volcano – is a great way to get incredible views of the city and enjoy the thrill of a cable car ride. Packed with vendors selling snacks and souvenirs, it is guaranteed to be a hit with kids and adults alike. 

 

No family trip to Ecuador would be complete without a visit to the Galapagos Islands. While it is not necessarily easy to explore the islands with kids, it is still doable as long as parents are prepared for the sometimes arduous boat trips. On these islands, visitors can come face-to-face with some of the world’s most unique wildlife, from friendly sea lions to huge iguanas. Some of the more remote islands even offer the chance to snorkel and scuba dive, although it is important to follow the rules and stay in designated areas. 

 

The Amazon rainforest is another must-visit destination on any Ecuador trip, but it may be too remote for very young children. However, teens and pre-teens may love exploring the rainforest and a guide can certainly make it easier. With enough luck, visitors may even catch a glimpse of some of the rainforest’s animals, such as sloths, monkeys, and even jaguars. There's also plenty of opportunities to learn about the native tribes who call the rainforest home. 

 

No matter where you choose to travel in Ecuador, safety should be a top concern for families. It is always important to be aware of your surroundings, and make sure that your kids stay near you at all times. While the cities and tourist areas tend to be safe, it is important to stay away from any areas that may appear dangerous. Pickpockets are common in Ecuador, so be sure to keep your valuable items in a secure place, and never leave any unattended.
